There is no single best way to print a T-shirt.
The right method depends on what you are making, how many you need, what the artwork looks like, the garment you are using, the finish you want and how quickly you need it.
That is why “screen print vs DTG vs DTF” is the wrong question if it is asked without context.
The better question is:

This guide breaks down the three methods from a buyer’s point of view.
01 / THE SHORT ANSWER
SCREEN PRINTING Best when repeatability, strong colour, specialist inks and efficient production across larger runs matter.
DTG Best suited to detailed or photographic artwork, especially where many colours are involved and the garment is compatible with direct digital printing.
DTF A flexible transfer-based process that can work well for detailed, multi-colour artwork and smaller or mixed garment runs.
None of these is automatically “premium” or “cheap.” Execution matters.
02 / WHAT IS SCREEN PRINTING?
Screen printing pushes ink through a prepared mesh screen onto the garment. Each print colour generally requires its own screen and setup.
That setup is one reason the method becomes more commercially efficient when the same design is repeated across more units.
Screen printing is widely used for:

Its biggest strength is control. A good screen printer can manage ink type, colour, opacity, placement and specialist effects with a high degree of consistency.

04 / WHAT IS DTG?
DTG means direct-to-garment.
A digital printer applies the image directly to the garment rather than using a separate screen for every colour.
That changes the economics and artwork possibilities.
DTG is often useful for:
- highly detailed artwork • gradients • photographic images • multi-colour designs • lower-volume production • designs where creating multiple screens would be inefficient
The garment is an important part of the result. Cotton-rich garments are commonly preferred for many DTG applications, while fabric, pretreatment, ink and curing all affect the final finish.
05 / WHEN DTG MAKES SENSE
DTG can be strong when artwork complexity is high but quantity is relatively low.
Imagine a detailed illustration containing dozens of shades.
With screen printing, reproducing that artwork may require colour separation and multiple screens or a deliberately simplified print treatment.
With DTG, the artwork can often remain much closer to the digital original.
That does not mean DTG is automatically better for detailed artwork in every case. The garment, pretreatment, desired colour strength and print feel still matter.
06 / WHAT IS DTF?
DTF means direct-to-film.
The artwork is printed onto a transfer film before being applied to the garment using heat and pressure.
It has become popular because it offers considerable flexibility across:
- colours • artwork detail • quantities • garment types • placements
DTF can be particularly useful for smaller projects, multi-colour artwork and jobs where screen setup would be disproportionate to the run.
07 / THE DTF TRADE-OFF
DTF has strengths, but it also has a physical characteristic buyers should understand.
The design is transferred onto the garment as a printed layer.
A small chest logo may feel relatively unobtrusive.
A very large, solid transfer can feel much more noticeable on the garment.
That means the decision is not simply:
“Can DTF reproduce this artwork?”
It is also:
“HOW WILL THIS PRINT AREA FEEL WHEN SOMEBODY WEARS IT?”
For large graphics, print feel becomes an important part of the production decision.
08 / ARTWORK: WHICH METHOD WINS?
There is no universal winner.
BOLD, LIMITED-COLOUR GRAPHICS Screen printing is often extremely strong.
PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTWORK DTG or DTF may provide a more straightforward digital route.
MANY COLOURS IN A SMALL RUN DTF or DTG can avoid the setup associated with multiple screen colours.
EXACT SPOT COLOURS Screen printing can offer greater control where a specific mixed ink colour is required.
SPECIAL EFFECTS Screen printing often provides the widest creative range.
09 / COLOUR MATCHING
This is frequently overlooked.
A full-colour digital print and a screen-printed spot colour are not the same colour workflow.
If a brand requires a very particular corporate colour, screen printing may allow the printer to work with a specifically mixed ink rather than relying solely on process-colour reproduction.
For casual artwork, this distinction may not matter.
For a global campaign using strict brand guidelines, it can matter a lot.
Always flag colour-critical projects before production.
10 / QUANTITY
Quantity changes the economics.
Screen printing includes setup work before production begins. Once the screens are prepared, however, the same artwork can be repeated efficiently.
DTG and DTF avoid much of that traditional screen setup, which can make them more practical for smaller runs.
