MERCHMODE LEARN Urgent Merch Production Guide
URGENT MERCH PRODUCTION GUIDE.
Urgent merchandise is a production problem with a fixed deadline. The faster the job, the fewer variables you can leave unresolved.
01 / START WITH THE REAL DEADLINE
Give the date and time the merchandise must be in hand, plus the final location. Do not only say “ASAP.”
02 / IDENTIFY THE NON-NEGOTIABLES
Decide what cannot change: product type, artwork, quantity, colour, production method or delivery date. Everything else can then be treated as a variable.
03 / CHECK STOCK FIRST
For rush work, stock availability often determines what is possible. A similar garment available today may be more useful than the perfect garment available next week.
04 / SIMPLIFY THE SPECIFICATION
Every extra product, print location, label, colourway and packaging step adds production complexity. If the deadline is dominant, simplify where it does not damage the brief.
05 / USE PRODUCTION-READY ARTWORK
Send original files, confirm dimensions and placement, and provide colour references where relevant. Avoid redesigning artwork during the production window.
06 / APPROVE QUICKLY
Urgent jobs need fast decisions. Nominate one person who can approve artwork, garment substitutions and production changes without a long chain of sign-off.
07 / BUILD A BACKUP ROUTE
If the first garment, printer or delivery route fails, what is the alternative? Distributed production networks can be valuable because capacity is not dependent on one supplier.
08 / THINK ABOUT PARTIAL DELIVERY
Sometimes the best solution is not “all units or nothing.” If an event needs 300 garments but only 150 are required on day one, a phased delivery may protect the deadline.
09 / PLAN DELIVERY AT THE SAME TIME AS PRODUCTION
Do not wait until the garments are finished to arrange transport. Confirm destination, receiving hours, contact details and courier requirements while production is underway.
10 / QUALITY STILL MATTERS
Urgent does not mean careless. A rushed job that arrives on time but is wrong is still a failed project. Protect artwork approval, garment checks and basic quality control.
11 / WHEN TO SAY NO
Some deadlines are not realistic. If a route requires unavailable stock, impossible courier timing or unapproved artwork, the responsible answer may be to change the specification rather than promise something that cannot be delivered.
THE MERCHMODE URGENT BRIEF
Send: - deadline and delivery location - product and quantity - size breakdown if known - artwork - decoration method if known - what can flex - what cannot flex
