Artist merchandise can be revenue, marketing, world-building and fan connection at the same time. The strongest merch feels like part of the artist’s creative universe rather than a logo added to a generic blank.

01 / START WITH THE MOMENT Merch should be built around a reason: • single or album release • tour • headline show • festival • anniversary • collaboration • limited drop • community/fan moment

The context changes the product, quantity and deadline.

02 / BUILD A PRODUCT MIX Common products include: • T-shirts • hoodies • sweatshirts • caps • posters • tote bags • accessories • limited premium pieces

Do not add products just to make the range look larger. One strong hero product plus a few supporting items is often easier to sell and manage.

03 / DESIGN FOR THE ARTIST WORLD Use visual language from the music, artwork, photography, lyrics, live show, symbols, characters or campaign. The merch should make sense even away from the merch table.

04 / CHOOSE THE RIGHT GARMENT Consider fit, weight, fabric, colour, size range, stock continuity, decoration compatibility and intended retail price. A tour basic and a premium limited drop may need different blanks.

05 / CHOOSE THE PRODUCTION METHOD Screen print can be strong for repeat graphic runs and specialist finishes. DTG can suit detailed digital artwork. DTF can offer flexible multi-colour production. Embroidery works well for caps, hoodies and premium details. The right answer depends on artwork, garment, quantity, feel and deadline.

06 / PRICE THE MERCH Calculate landed cost first, then model retail price, gross profit, venue commissions where applicable, payment fees and unsold stock risk. Do not choose retail price by copying another artist without checking your own economics.

07 / ORDER THE RIGHT QUANTITY Estimate demand using: • previous merch sales • ticket sales / venue capacity • audience strength by city • online demand • pre-orders or waitlists • product price • number of shows • replenishment options

Treat the first quantity as a planning assumption, then update using real sell-through data.

08 / SIZE MIX Track size sales. Selling out of medium while holding large quantities of another size can limit total revenue even when stock remains.

09 / TOUR MERCH For tours, plan: • stock allocation by date • storage • transport • venue delivery • replenishment • cashless/card payment • nightly counts • damaged stock • returns to storage

International artists should also consider whether producing some UK inventory locally is operationally simpler than transporting all finished stock into the country.

10 / ONLINE + LIVE SHOULD SUPPORT EACH OTHER A live drop can create urgency, while online sales extend reach beyond the venue. Coordinate product availability, photography, links and stock rules so channels do not compete accidentally.

11 / MERCH AS CONTENT Use sampling, printing, fittings, packaging and backstage preparation as content. The making of the merch can become part of the rollout.

12 / LIMITED DOES NOT MEAN RANDOM Scarcity works best when the product has a reason to be limited: a show, date, collaboration, version or moment. Artificial scarcity cannot compensate for a weak product.

13 / TRACK THE DATA After every drop or show record: • units sold • revenue • product mix • size mix • average transaction value • sell-through • unsold stock • channel/source

The next production run should be based on this data.

14 / THE MERCHMODE PROCESS BRIEF → PRODUCT → QUANTITY → METHOD → PROOF/SAMPLE → PRODUCTION → DELIVERY → REPLENISHMENT

You do not need to know every production detail before asking for a quote. Send the creative brief, dates, quantity range and references, and build the route from there.
